Some people access their history, bonds and emotional language more naturally in Portuguese. Others, because of routine, school, work or life context, can organize certain experiences more clearly in English. The choice of language can be part of care.
When language matters
Language is not only translation. It influences the way a person names emotions, describes situations, thinks, feels shame or asks for help. In therapy, being able to choose or move between Portuguese and English can make communication more spontaneous and precise.
My background also includes experience with Brazilian children and teenagers who speak Portuguese, but who, because they live in another cultural or school context, feel more comfortable expressing themselves in English. In these cases, being able to move between the two languages becomes an important difference: listening can follow the language the person chooses to name what they feel, while still respecting their history, family and cultural references.
Who this is for
- People who want to speak in Portuguese about history, family and bonds.
- People who feel more comfortable organizing experiences in English.
- Brazilian families in bilingual contexts who notice this movement between languages.
